In her article marking World Mental Health Day, Dr Neethu Mariam Chacko, Specialist Psychiatrist at FSHN Clinic, highlights the importance of listening to people experiencing mental health difficulties with empathy, patience and without judgement. Emphasising this year’s theme, “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” she explains that mental health struggles differ from person to person and cannot be fully understood through diagnoses alone. She encourages families, friends and healthcare professionals to avoid dismissive comments, respect individual experiences, involve people in decisions about their treatment and offer practical, continued support. She concludes that genuine listening, understanding and kindness can reduce stigma, help people feel less alone and make mental health care more compassionate and effective.
